Orthopaedic Fellowship Information
The Fellowship is an integral part of the Orthopaedic Unit of the Monash University Department of Surgery. The Fellowship is principally concerned with the teaching of orthopaedic aspects of shoulder and elbow surgery. Experience in this area includes joint replacement, arthroplasty and all types of arthroscopic surgery. It is expected that all Fellows will generate at least one research project to final draft stage for a peer reviewed journal during the tenure of the Fellowship.
The Fellow is required to demonstrate active participation at the Orthopaedic Department weekly conferences and X-ray sessions, ward rounds, outpatients, journal clubs and preparation for operations. The Fellow is also required to attend some private consulting with Professor Bell, including Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre, to again further clinical experience in shoulder and elbow problems, and sports-associated conditions, with a particular emphasis on examination technique. The Fellow attends a number of operating sessions every week. The types of cases involved are predominantly of the shoulder and elbow. In the public hospital system there is a weekly list with Professor Bell, where the Fellow has supervised operating. In the private sector, the role is as an assistant.
Prospective applicants should aspire to full-time or major part-time shoulder and elbow or upper limb surgery. There are a number of ongoing research projects, all in the upper limb, in which the Fellow is required to be involved. At least one specific project is always nominated for the Fellowship, which can be completed in the six month rotation. It is expected that all Fellows will generate at least one published article in a peer review journal.
