Dr McEwen has a particular interest in surgery for sporting injuries of the knee and his post fellowship training and ongoing involvement with the ICRS and ISAKOS reflects this interest.
He has been in full-time clinical practice in Townsville since 2001, following the completion of his advanced orthopaedic training in 1999. Dr McEwen has undergone post-Fellowship subspecialty training and dedicated himself almost exclusively to knee surgery. He is team surgeon for the Townsville Crocodiles National Basketball League team and works with the Townsville Fire Women’s National Basketball League Team.
Dr McEwen is actively involved in medical education at all levels from lecturing medical students at James Cook University to mentoring advanced orthopaedic surgical trainees at The Townsville Hospital. He is a Director of Training at the Institute of Orthopaedic Surgery, The Townsville Hospital and a member of the Regional Training Committee, Qld Branch of the Australian Orthopaedic Association.
He is a founding member and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Orthopaedic Research of Queensland (ORIQL). ORIQL currently employs a local medical graduate to undertake orthopaedic research and works collaboratively with James Cook University, Queensland Health and the Mater Hospital.
Dr McEwen travels to scientific conferences and workshops and studies extensively to maintain his knowledge and skills at the highest level. He has presented many scientific papers in Australia and overseas and has been an invited speaker at conferences in Australian, the UK, Canada and New Zealand. Dr McEwen was educated at Marist College Ashgrove in Brisbane and The University of Queensland.
