Mr Gonzalvo specialises in spinal and skull base surgery with expertise in microsurgery and keyhole surgery of the spine, complex reconstructive interventions for spinal fractures and deformity and congenital malformations of the craniovertebral junction.
He is one of the few surgeons in Australia trained in combined neurosurgery and orthopaedic spinal Fellowships for three years. He performs more than 300 spinal procedures every year, including keyhole decompression and micro discectomy, anterior cervical discectomy and fusion, cervical and lumbar decompression, lumbar fusion, spinal fractures and tumours, spinal deformity and microsurgery of the base of the skull and craniovertebral junction.
The results of his research are published in the highest-impact journals of his specialty (Spine, Neurosurgery and Journal of Neurosurgery). Mr Gonzalvo is the Director of Neurosurgery at Austin Health and visiting neurosurgeon at the Northern Hospital (both associated to The University of Melbourne) where he teaches medical students, residents, registrars and Fellows. His private practice is based at Epworth Richmond and Warringal Private Hospital.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, a Member of the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia, a Senior Lecturer at The University of Melbourne and a Member of the Spine Society of Australia.
